Daily upkeep of the heritage building
Widowed father of two, Ding, has known tough times in his life, so these days takes nothing for granted. Describing himself as ‘old fashioned’ the 51-year-old derives pleasure from the simple things in life; like tending his houseplants, cooking for himself and his family, and visiting his parents who live nearby in Cho Yiu Chuen.
His children, now in their early twenties, are pursuing careers in education and civil service, and Ding talks of them with an immense sense of pride. Giving them the best start in life, after them losing their mum at a very young age, remains his top priority.
Unfamiliar with Central Market before starting work there, Ding now derives great satisfaction from contributing to the daily upkeep of this heritage building. He and his team appreciate how important a landmark it is for the community, and they work hard to maintain it to a high standard. But at the same time, he admits that he’s never happier than when reaching home in the evening and relaxing with a cup of his favourite tieguanyin tea.
