    I’m L.K. Chan, the architect and curator taking charge of the transformation project of Chinachem Group’s fossil garden. Just call me Q because the pronunciation is similar to my given name “Kiu” in Chinese.

    One of the distinctive features of Nina Tower is probably its sizeable collection of over 100 wood fossils owned by the late Chinachem chairwoman Nina Wang and showcased on the podium of the building. Regrettably these ancient relics, unlike dinosaur fossils, have not been given the attention they deserve due to their association with dull and old-fashioned impressions. For this reason, Chinachem Group has decided to transform the fossil garden into a new edutainment destination highlighting the meeting of art and science to enrich cultural life for people of all ages, at both community and citywide levels.

    My professional career began at Asia’s longest established architectural firm where I spent 22 years and managed to win quite a number of personal and corporate awards at both local and international levels. As director of design and projects at a major developer, I led my teams to build Hysan Place and engaged in many revitalisation projects. I'm a strong advocate of “Life is the sum of your choices”, believing that we only live once, and our lives are certainly more valuable than money and comfort. So I I've now said goodbye to my decade-long career and started something new!

    Becoming an entrepreneur was no easy task. I needed to model myself on a Renaissance Man, explore an array of different disciplines, and assume the roles of being an artist and a scientist. This has laid a solid foundation for my second career as a curator, preparing me to become a more knowledgeable, creative and perspective-taking individual.

    I’ve also stepped into the world of IT and innovation, completing an incubation programme at HKSTP. I’m now working hard to promote Easy VR to SMEs, schools and social enterprises which have limited resources and dedicated IT teams. These solid experiences have proved highly valuable in transforming the fossil garden, enabling me to deploy the IoT, mobile apps and mechanical devices to present artefacts in an artistic and innovative way.

    This is not the total sum of my new endeavours; I’ve also established two original cultural brands. In addition to setting up my own studio, I’ve engaged in waste recycling and eco-creation; I blog, have become a YouTuber and create animations. I can’t help but feel blessed as all my friends think I’m a qualified multitasker.

    I sincerely hope that my exposure to different realms and fields will help transform the fossil garden into a not-to-be-missed attraction for all, regardless of age, background and taste, and thus positively impact on Tsuen Wan and Hong Kong as a whole. If I’m asked to leave a message for others, I will say: “Always work hard and stay passionate in life – you will surely be rewarded.”
