When he sees the beauty of flowers, Raymond Chow, an amateur home gardener for over 20 years, believes he can see them smile. “The joy of growing flowers is seeing them bloom, as if they’re beaming at me,” he says.
Indulging in the sea of fresh blooms at the Flower Market near his old home used to be Raymond’s favourite pastime. Through conversations with seasoned florists and learning from a horticulture master, he acquired comprehensive gardening know-how, enriched by the scientific mindset he gained from his previous job as a laboratory assistant. For him, gardening is more than a hobby. It’s a source of pride, as his green thumb has earned him awards at Flower Show competitions, and even helped his niece win a school contest.
In January this year, Raymond moved into Pine Care Jade Maison, located in Kwu Tung North, Sheung Shui, with a secret worry. “I thought I would have to give up gardening. But to my surprise, our Programme Assistant Mei-yee approached me and suggested setting up a gardening interest group,” he says with a big smile. Early this year, Mei-yee launched a peer learning programme, inviting residents with specialist skills to become ‘Silver Teachers’. Alongside gardening, ink-painting and calligraphy interest groups are also up and running.
While Raymond is well-versed in flowers, Mei-yee suggested growing vegetables instead, quipping, “Don’t you think it’s more practical to fill our stomachs?” The group has started growing okra, eggplant, lettuce and more in the rooftop garden, with pea shoots in the pipeline for next season. They’re eagerly looking forward to sharing the seasonal harvest with their fellow residents.
Tat-wah, Ah-chi, and Hoi-hing are the fellow members of Raymond’s group. Though inexperienced, they have quickly become accustomed to caring for the plants every morning and evening. “It brings me happiness!” Hoi-hing exclaims, to which Ah-chi agrees, saying, “My life has become more fulfilling.” Tat-wah is all smiles as he observes that “Seeing the plants grow from seed gives me a sense of achievement. I’m so grateful for Raymond’s guidance.” Raymond humbly responds that “I’m still learning myself. Now that we live together under one roof, I see you all as my siblings.”
The bond between the four members has blossomed since the group’s formation two months ago. Other residents are also closely following the progress of the plants through the photos Mei-yee posts in the common area, filling the elderly home with excited anticipation.
