Organised by Chinachem Group (“The Group”), full-time students of design-related disciplines at tertiary institutions in Hong Kong and Macau were invited to participate in the Nina Park Design Competition 2023 and submit creative designs for the Amphitheatre of Nina Park, the largest collection of wood fossils among urban parks in Asia, which has recently opened. The team from the Faculty of Architecture at The University of Hong Kong won the Champion with a design aiming to create a tranquil, eco-friendly sanctuary that maximises functionality while upholding sustainable practices. The teams from the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Hong Kong Chu Hai College and the Design school of the PolyU Hong Kong Community College respectively received 1st and 2nd runner-up positions.

The students’ submissions were scrutinised and selected by the distinguished panel of judges for the Nina Park Design Competition 2023 comprised international and local renowned architects and industry leaders, including: representatives from Chinachem Group; Professor Nelson Chen, Principal Architect at Nelson Chen Architects and former Director of CUHK School of Architecture; Michael Kwok, Asia Pacific Council Chair at ARU; Brian Lee, Consulting Partner at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; David Nelson, Senior Executive Partner and Head of Design at Foster + Partners; Kam-Sing Wong, former Secretary for the Environment.

Organised to provide a platform for creative young talent to showcase their skills, the Nina Park Design Competition 2023 challenged students to create an environmentally-friendly and inclusive space that would serve as a shelter, a gathering place and a hub for activities, celebrating diversity, inclusiveness and storytelling. The aim was to create an inspiring and engaging destination that would captivate visitors and foster a sense of community. Over 90 creative submissions were received and 10 exceptional teams were shortlisted, showcasing the young students’ immense talent and innovative thinking.

Chinachem Group extends its warmest congratulations to the winners and expresses sincere gratitude to all participants for their contributions, as well as to the judges for their valuable insights. By engaging the brightest minds in the design field, the Group aims to generate innovative ideas and concepts to commemorate the opening of the vibrant Nina Park. This initiative highlights the Group’s strong belief in the power of design to enhance the quality of life for individuals and communities, creating a positive impact on society.

The first phase of Nina Park was opened last December. Covering an area of close to 70,000 sq.ft., Nina Park and its facilities showcase the largest collection of wood fossils among urban parks in Asia, all gathered by the late Mrs. Nina Wang, former chairwoman of Chinachem Group. This unique legacy will inspire local and international visitors through exciting "edutainment" programs and innovative designs. As Hong Kong's first and only wood fossil park, Nina Park invites everyone to embark on a voyage of a million lifetimes.
