Many, given the success and wealth that her late father created in his shipping business, would have chosen a silk lined, gently paced, limousine ride through life. Not Anna. Inspired by her father’s motto of ‘exercise persistently, use sparingly, work diligently’, she charged headlong into a life of study, hard work, education, architecture, dance, arts, and charity – and this is by no means an exhaustive list.
No more glorious example of Anna Sohmen’s own mantra of ‘re-use, reduce, recycle’, is to be found than the Pok Fu Lam landmark of Béthanie, the beautifully restored 19th century chapel complex which is now home to The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), School of Film and Television.
But it wasn’t always so.
