    “Let’s eat!” is a phrase that Ho Hin-bon, Supervisor of To Kwa Wan Community Living Room, hears daily at his workplace. “Members enjoy casual chats over meals at the dining room, sharing the food they freshly- prepared here. This sense of neighbourhood is what we most expect,” he says, agreed upon by Angela Wun, Senior Section Manager (Service Development) of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs), who remarks, “They feel happier as their lives being enriched.”

    Last year, the government launched the Pilot Programme on Community Living Room, with the aim of providing residents of subdivided units with additional living space and opportunities to enrich their social networks. Ultimately, the scheme looks to enhance their living standard and sense of belonging to the community. Operated by TWGHs, the 2-storey branch in To Kwa Wan can serve 600 families in its 7,000-sqaure-foot property since its opening in July this year.

    Alongside basic facilities such as a kitchen, dining room, living room, study room, washing machines, and dryers, the premises also house a children’s play corner, shower rooms, as well as a gym, band room, and multimedia room. The fully furnished space allows parents to do chores like laundry and cooking without having to worry about their kids, who can either study or play at the site.

    Mandy Tang, Chairman of TWGHs, notes, “Aside from meeting the government’s operation requirements, we have incorporated extra amenities and services based on our thorough understanding of kaifongs’ living needs.” She further illustrates, “There is a space available for members to book for organising private gatherings or even birthday parties with families and friends.”

    With expansive windows, the Community Living Room enjoys a spectacular view of the Sung Wong Toi Garden, which helps boost the mood of its occupants. And the walls of the establishment are designated for kids to create murals, seeking to cultivate a sense of involvement. Tang adds, “Our on-site colleagues are able to observe and identify members in need of specific supports, and proactively refer them to TWGHs’ and other local service units. This approach enables us to offer timely assistance to grassroots families.”

    The positive impact of the Community Living Room extends beyond the disadvantaged, as it also fosters stronger social bonds within the community. The TWGHs team has visited almost every single shop in the vicinity to introduce the new service, receiving enthusiastic responses from over 20 retail outlets who are pleased to offer discounts to their members. Tang concludes with delight, “The Community Living Room enhances the well- being of the entire community and celebrates the sense of neighbourhood that our citizens hold dear.”
