University Hall - A Castle-Turned-Dormitory
Only 15 minutes’ walk from the Pokfulam Farm, Douglas Castle is another heritage connecting members of the community in a unique way.
Built in 1861 by a Scottish merchant, Douglas Lapraik, as his company headquarters and residence, the premises was acquired in 1894 by The French Society of Foreign Missions, who renamed the building Nazareth and redeveloped it into a facility for missionary retreat with an extension of a printing workshop. In 1954, Nazareth was sold to The University of Hong Kong as a dormitory for male students and known as University Hall since then.
A much-loved spot for taking photos, University Hall is the harmonious blend of Tudor, Gothic and Renaissance Revival architectural styles. Over the past six decades, this charming edifice has witnessed the growth of generations of students, and the transformation to a study and living place. Though the building is not open to the public, you can still feel the history in there by appreciating its quaint exterior, which was formally declared a historic monument in 1995.
