Until that point, life in the village of Maosi had been handicapped by the daily necessity of crossing this unpredictable branch of the Yellow River. Over the centuries, many primitive mud and wood crossings had been swept away when the rivers were in spate, lives had been lost to the current, students were prevented from getting to school, and the elderly were kept apart from relatives on the opposite bank.
That was until a group of volunteers, from Hong Kong and the Mainland universities, assembled in Maosi to focus their learning and energies on helping this remote community. Using materials preferably sourced locally, and without the help of any heavy machinery, some 60 pairs of hands assembled a gabion bridge with stone, steel and bamboo to finally link the two banks of the river in a robust and sustainable manner.
